St. Matthews - A Great Louisville Community

St. Matthews Homes

St. Matthews developed at the same time as the city of Louisville.  The name originated from the area’s first church in 1850, St. Matthews Episcopal Church.  The economy was heavily agricultural well into the 20th century.  The St. Matthews Produce Exchange from 1910 to 1946 made the community the second-largest potato shipper in the country.  The farms were gradually subdivided and development began to move in – St. Matthews became suburbia.  The community especially saw growth after the Ohio River Flood of 1937, as many Louisville families moved in for higher ground.

St. Matthews is a major shopping area and is home to the second and fifth largest malls in the state, along with a large collection of shopping centers and stores along Shelbyville Road.  The neighborhood is full of restaurants and eateries, both chain and local establishments.  The Bluegrass Brewing Company is a popular restaurant and microbrewery.  Havana Rumba is a Cuban eatery that is not to be missed, with delicious tapas – they were voted the Best St. Matthews Restaurant by Urbanspoon.

St. Matthews is home to two large parks - Seneca Park and Brown Park.  Seneca is a sprawling 526 acre park that features basketball and tennis courts, walking paths, horseback riding trails, and an 18-hole golf course.  Brown Park is an award-winning, 28 acre park with walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and opportunities to see several species of ducks and geese.

St. Matthews boasts a wide variety of home styles and prices, ranging from small ranches to large estates.  Cape Cods are definitely the most abundant, with mature trees and classic designs.  This is a highly sought after neighborhood due to its small town charm, beautiful real estate, and the abundance of parks and shopping.  The average home price in St. Matthews is $235,000, with many homes staying on the market for a short time.  This community truly has something to offer everyone!
