139th Running of the Kentucky Derby May 4th
It is time for the "Run for the Roses" at the 139th Annual Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 4th. Gates open at approximately 8:00 a.m. with the first race kicking up dirt at 10:30 a.m. The featured Derby will take place at 6:24 p.m., so be ready to place your bets at Churchill Downs.
Bluegrass, bourbon and thoroughbred racing are some of the things Kentucky is known for and this event brings them all together. The special bluegrass is in the landscaping, the bourbon is in the traditional Mint Julep and the thoroughbreds, well they'll be running down the track in hopes of shining in the spotlight of the Winner's Circle.
People come from all around the world to not only witness the Kentucky Derby, but some to participate. Thousands of horses, trainers, and owners strive to be a part of the starting gates each year, but only 20 are chosen to participate.
The following thoroughbreds will be making their run for the Winner's Circle at this year’s event: Orb, Verrazano, Goldencents, Java's War, Overanalyze, Revolutionary, Lines of Battle, Vyjack, Will Take Charge, Itsmyluckyday, Black Onyx, Palace Malice, Normandy Invasion, Frac Daddy, Mylute, Oxbow, Falling Sky, Fear Kitten, Giant Finish, Winning Cause and Golden Soul.
The stars will be plentiful in the stands and along the grounds, and this year's National Anthem will be sang by the four-time Country Music Association's "Female Vocalist of the Year" Martina McBride.
Put on your best Derby attire and come to Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4th for the 139th Annual Run for the Roses at the Kentucky Derby.
