A Quick Guide to the Best-Rated Private K-12 Schools in the Louisville Area

When moving to a new city, finding a good school is at the top of every parent’s to-do list. Louisville is home to several private schools, each offering a different take on curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Read on to learn about some of the different options available for independent schooling in and around Louisville.

Kentucky Country Day School

Located in eastern Jefferson County, this elite K-12 school certainly has one of the best reputations in Louisville. It is one of the largest independent schools in the area, with a school population nearing 1,000. KCD is co-educational and the average class size is sixteen. Students perform exceptionally on standardized tests, and advanced placement courses are also offered. KCD also has an extensive arts program, with students putting up several theatrical productions each year. Tuition ranges from $10,000 for Junior Kindergarten to $18,000 for grades 6-12. Overall, KCD is an excellent all-around choice, known for the quality of both its curricular and extra-curricular programs and esteemed in reputation throughout the Louisville metropolitan area.

Louisville Collegiate School

Located near Cave Hill National Cemetery, Louisville Collegiate School is another one of the city's elite K-12 co-educational institutions. Founded in 1915 and originally an all-girls school, Collegiate is slightly smaller than Kentucky Country Day, with a student population of around 700. Most of the teachers at Louisville Collegiate hold advanced post-secondary degrees. Like KCD, Louisville Collegiate offers AP courses and an extensive sports program. Tuition ranges from $10,000 for Junior Kindergarten to $26,000 for the upper years. Special events at the school include the Fall Festival and Grandparents Day, a tradition in the Lower School where students invite their grandparents to class for the day.

Highlands Latin School

Smaller than the more traditionally elite schools of Louisville Collegiate and Kentucky Country Day, Highlands Latin School focuses intensively on academic excellence. The results show, with the school scoring in the top one percent of cross-country school scores on the ITBS for the last nine years. Highlands Latin School is a Christian school with a focus on classical languages. All students from Grade 2 onward study Latin, with the belief that the study of Latin improves learning in all other areas. Christian Studies is also a part of the school curriculum. HLS also has a cottage program for homeschooled children and an additional campus in Indianapolis. HLS is a newer independent school, founded in 2000, and has a population of around 500 students. Tuition ranges from $3,500 per year for Kindergarten to $6,800 per year for Grade 7 and up. This school is a positive choice if you want your child to have a firmly grounded, classic and Latin-based education.

Sacred Heart Schools

The Sacred Heart community of schools, founded in 1877 by the Ursuline Sisters, comprises four different kinds of school in Louisville. Sacred Heart Academy is an 850-student all-girls school that offers the International Baccalaureate Program, the only Catholic school in the Louisville area to do so. Sacred Heart Model School is a K-8 school for boys and girls with a population of around 380. The community also includes the Sacred Heart School for the Arts, which offers supplementary arts programs for boys and girls in all areas of the arts, from music to drama to painting. Rounding out the Sacred Heart Schools group is the Sacred Heart Preschool, a school for children ages 1 to 6 that offers Montessori and Progressive educational models from age 3 onward. Tuition for both the Model School and the girls-only Academy is $11,000 per year.

As you can see, Louisville has a wide variety of private schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12. With a little bit of research, you are sure to find a school to meet your child's curricular and extracurricular needs.
