Celebrate Independent in Louisville Bookstores May 2
May 2 is Derby Day, but it’s also Independent Bookstore Day. If you’d like to enjoy a quieter atmosphere this Derby weekend, you’re going to love a visit to Carmichael’s on this day. The bookstore is hosting an alternative Derby party that brings horse racing into the bookstore in a totally unique, fun way.
Be Independent at Carmichael’s
For each race that happens at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, Carmichael’s will offer another collectible for sale. A Derby-themed activity will occur with every race, so you can participate in Derby fun even miles away from the racetrack.
Join in on the activities with an “Old Fashioned Derby party,” an event that requires you to mix up an Old Fashioned cocktail. Or maybe you want to compete in “A Race Around Carmichael’s” while the horses race around the track at Churchill Downs.
Nibble on treats from Bourbon Barrel Foods, and listen to the races as they occur while you’re at this fun event. The Carmichael’s Kids section will have its own Derby activities for the kids, to keep them busy and entertained all day long. Special children’s items will also be up for sale.
Gorgeous bookmarks and posters will be on sale courtesy of several Kentucky businesses, including Louisville's Hound Dog Press. Proceeds from the bookmark and poster sales will go to promote literacy. Make a donation to Carmichael’s, and it will go to the Louisville Story Program. Anyone who comes to this event will enter a prize drawing to win all sorts of goodies, including books.
You’ll find Carmichael's at 2720 Frankfort Avenue, in the Crescent Hill neighborhood. Get there at noon to join in on the fun.
In Crescent Hill
People began living in Crescent Hill in the 1850s, even before the Civil War was waged. There are several historic buildings and things to see around here. The neighborhood has its own historic district that gives you a great look at the history of Louisville.
Unique architecture, trendy boutiques and a strong community spirit make Crescent Hill one of Louisville’s most distinct neighborhoods. It has a look of its own, a spirit of its own and a vibrancy that the residents love. The independent bookstore Carmichael’s is a great example of the unique local businesses you can find in this neighborhood.
Get a closer look at some of the one-of-a-kind stuff Louisville has to offer, and visit Crescent Hill this Derby Day. If you’re not going to Churchill Downs, you might as well go here and join the book party.
