DeaFestival in Louisville August 30
DeaFestival is partnering with World Fest to hold its eleventh event. Adding deaf culture to the weekend's festival lineup presents Louisville with the locale to celebrate deaf culture through the art, language, talent and diversity of the deaf and hard of hearing. DeaFestival will take place in four segmented attractions at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts at 501 West Main Street in Louisville 10:00am until 8:00pm.
Pure Imagination and Pure Fun
The theme of DeaFestival 2014 is "Pure Imagination" and is present throughout the programming. DeaFestival begins in the morning with the children's program featuring comedians, storytellers, musicians and stage performers teaching and entertaining. The afternoon segment is listed under the title Spotlights, a showcase where dancers and storytellers will take the main stage along with the day's theatrical performances. Jam Tent will finish off DeaFestival with performances by the top deaf and hard of hearing musicians and singers.
Visual Arts Exhibit and Short Films Presentation
New to DeaFestival this year is a presentation of short films by deaf filmmakers. In the Cookie Williams Visual Artist Studio, the work of seventeen artists will be on display during DeaFestival. The artists express themselves in a variety of mediums. Work from painters with various styles and distinct preferences for oil, acrylic and watercolor will be at the show. Pencil and charcoal drawings, etched gourds, greeting cards and pottery all from the featured artists will be showcased.
The goal of DeaFestival is to help the community understand deafness, promote the strengths of the deaf artist and performer, and provide role models to youth. The sense of hearing is not required in order to love art.
