Discover the Louisville Nature Center
One of the most ironic things about our culture is that although we struggle to save our natural spaces and appreciate the environment, many of us are still not outdoors experiencing it. A staggering number of us would rather spend time indoors surrounded digital distractions rather than enjoy the world around us. However, with places like the Louisville Nature Center offering fully immersive experiences and educating visitors, there is just no excuse to sit on the couch.
The Louisville Nature Center
The mission of the Center is to provide education and encourage an appreciation of the environment. The Center’s passion, combined with the natural beauty of the area, has made this one of the most unique community resources in the city. Located right in the heart of Louisville, the area has over 41-acres of prime hiking trails and natural beauty, all enhanced by a world-class education center. Pack a lunch, throw on your hiking boots, and get ready for a day outdoors.
So Much More Than Just a Park
More than just a collection of feathers and abandoned nests, the Louisville Nature Center offers visitors a one-of-a-kind experience. You'll enjoy a lush wildflower garden that showcases local plants and is home to over 30 different butterfly species. You'll be surrounded by dragonflies, and at least 180 different plants, shrubs, trees and grasses throughout the Beargrass Creek State Park, including the hollow 'hugging' tree. If you are a bird enthusiast you'll be amazed by the bird blind, where you can observe more than 150 different species. For those who are more scientific, there's nothing like the fascinating wildlife and watershed exhibits in the Center that offer hands-on learning and plenty of information for voracious minds.
What Are Your Kids Doing This Summer?
A unique feature of the Louisville Nature Center is the programs they offer throughout the year. If you are concerned your child is spending too much time in front of the television, consider one of the unique summer programs offered. Beginning at age four, children have the opportunity to explore the reserve in full-day camps. Filled with stimulating activities designed to appeal to specific age groups, these camps offer urban children the priceless opportunity to spend their summer outdoors, safely and productively.
Get Moving and Enjoy the Greenery
Adults can enjoy the center as much as their younger counterparts by signing up for the “Walk Your Way to Wellness” program. By hiking the many trails throughout the park, you can earn points to be entered into draws for exciting prizes. Members can also join group walks throughout the reserve, which finish up back at the Center with informative lectures on health and natural living. This is an excellent way to get gentle exercise while socializing in a beautiful green space.
Louisville offers so many resources to its citizens, but without a doubt, the Louisville Nature Center and Beargrass Creek State Reserve are among its best. There are acres of untouched natural beauty to enjoy, only steps away from the city's best urban amenities. Get up, get out there, and see for yourself why the Louisville Nature Center is one of the city's gems.
