Don’t Miss the 2014 Louisville Polar Plunge
Are you interested in joining the ranks of polar bears this year while donating to a great cause that helps millions of people around the world? Then the 2014 Louisville Polar Plunge is for you! As one of the largest Special Olympics fundraisers in the world, raising $308,000 in 2013, the Polar Plunge is a Louisville favorite and a fun way to support the disabled. Fundraiser enthusiasts and polar plungers alike gear up for a spectacular year this 2014. The Polar Plunge is scheduled for a chilly March 1 at Tumbleweed on the Waterfront.
What is the Polar Plunge?
A unique and fun event, the Polar Plunge offers a festive atmosphere for the community of Louisville to enjoy great food and prizes. Similar to a Walk-a-Thon, the Plunge maintains that each participant must solicit donations in order to support the cause. A minimum of $75 is required from each participant, except for a minimum of $50 for Junior Plungers or for the Pee Wee Plunge. Lastly, instead of walking, participants take a plunge into the chilly Ohio River from the docks at Tumbleweed on the Waterfront. 2013 saw six Polar Plunges across Kentucky, attracting 2,800 participants and raising over $685,000 for the Special Olympics.
How to Get Involved in The Polar Plunge
For Louisville natives who haven't yet partaken in the Polar Plunge in previous years, now is the time! This year, the Louisville Polar Plunge is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, and is anticipating the best year yet - both for funds raised and fun had! So get involved and get yourself registered. You can register online with three options: join a team, form a team, or join as an individual. After registering, get in touch with your friends and family via email and let them know you've joined the Polar Plunge; they will have the opportunity to join your team or pledge funds. You can then sign in online for your Plunge wristband, which you can pick up either at pre-registration or at the Waterfront on the day of the Plunge.
Pre-Registration: Skip the Lines
Pre-registration will be held on February 27 at Tumbleweed on the Waterfront from 1 PM to 7 PM. After registering online and completing your fundraising, you can opt to skip the lines on the day of the Plunge and attend the pre-registration to pick up your special gift and complete the registration process.
Taking the Plunge: The Polar Bears' Schedule
On the day of the plunge - Saturday, March 1 - registration will open at 9:30 AM for those Polar Bears who haven't attended the pre-registration. Opening ceremonies take place at 10:00 AM, and Plunging begins at 10:30 AM. At this time there will also be a festive costume competition. An awards ceremony will occur at noon, after which the Post Plunge Bash at Tumbleweed kicks off.
