Everything You Need to Know About the Louisville Edition of Step Out: The Walk to Stop Diabetes
If you're looking to participate in a charity event in the Louisville area this October, then Step Out is ideal for you. Step Out, the Walk to Stop Diabetes, is a great activity designed to raise awareness and funds for the American Diabetes Association. Here's what you need to know.
Step Out: A Brief History
Step Out is an annual fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. The first Step Out fundraiser took place over twenty years ago, and since then it has raised over $175 million for the fight against diabetes. In 2012, the walk had over 120,000 participants in 120 locations all over the United States. These 120 locations raised $24 million dollars that year. Of all the funds raised from all avenues in any given year, three quarters of the money is spent on research and advocacy. The American Diabetes Association publishes research in its Forefront Magazine and provides free meal planning tools to diabetics everywhere.
Step Out Louisville: Event Details
Step Out Louisville will be happening on October 19 on the Great Lawn at Waterfront Park. Registration opens at 9 AM, and the walk and run begin at 10 AM. Doug Proffitt, from WHAS-11, will be featured as the media personality for the event. Participants have a choice of a 1-mile walk or a 3-mile walk/run.
Step Out is family-friendly, so bring the kids for this great cause. Participants may bring strollers, and there will also be a children's program featuring crafts and other fun activities. If bringing your canine friend, remember to keep Fido on a leash.
The ADA Café will be providing snacks and drinks, including fruit, bagels, and coffee. Step Out will also feature a Health & Wellness Festival featuring a variety of health vendors.
This year's fundraising goal is $250,000.
How to Get Involved
There are a number of ways to participate in this year's Step Out. Participants can register as a team leader and form a walk or run team; this is a great way to get friends involved in a fun event, and it provides an opportunity for you to raise funds to support a great cause. Those wishing to participate can also join a pre-existing team or register as an individual. People who live with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes may register as a Red Strider, someone who serves as a living reminder to other participants of why the walk exists. Red Striders will receive a red hat, free massages, and lots of other goodies. Finally, the American Diabetes Association will need a number of volunteers to help with the event. Volunteers will be responsible for setting up tables, chairs, and banners, assisting with events, and more. Finally, interested parties can always show support by donating funds to their favorite participant or team.
Step Out Louisville is a great community event with lots of fun family activities, all for a noble cause. In the last twenty years, Step Out has raised over one hundred million dollars in the fight against diabetes. If you're looking for a fun outing in the Louisville area this October, support the American Diabetes Association by attending Step Out.
