Hawaiian Luau at Churchill Downs June 20th
A night out in Louisville to experience the excitement of horse racing at world renowned Churchill Downs is a bucket list item for people around the globe and even for many people living right in Louisville. If you are waiting for the chance to experience the historic track and its equine entertainment on a non-traditional evening, Churchill Downs has put a twist on the classic night out and added a Hawaiian luau theme for racing on June 20.
An Excuse to Wear Your Tropical Best
With a rare excuse to reach to the back in your closet and pull out your Hawaiian shirts and sundresses, you can start your weekend with a smile and a night at the track on Friday, June 20 at Churchill Downs. Can you imagine standing feet from Rosie Napravnik as she mounts a gorgeous chestnut filly or Calvin Borel entering the tunnel to the track on a bay colt while you sip a mai tai with hibiscus behind your ear and a lei around your neck?
Hats Off to a Hawaiian Luau
Hawaiian luau is certainly not the traditional image of fascinators, fedoras, bowties and bourbon that comes to mind when we think of horse racing during Derby season. Downs after Dark is giving us a non-traditional spring meet experience with a DJ on the plaza and casual Hawaiian attire while watching world class athletes compete in a historic venue.
An early arrival and visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum are in order for the serious fan and the curious. Churchill Downs gates open at 4:00pm. Kentucky Derby Museum is open until 5:00pm. First race post time is 6:00pm. Churchill Downs is a destination that offers entertainment at all price levels. You may create your experience to fit your wallet; and June 20, if you dare, is the day to do it in a grass skirt.
