Learn the Art of Making Tools at Kaviar Forge March 10
Blacksmithing is not a lost art, and the age-old techniques of tool making are still very much in use today. Learn this skill for yourself this March at Kaviar Forge, and discover the technique of actually making your own tools. You might be surprised by how much you can do with your own two hands, the most powerful tools of all.
The tool-making blacksmith workshop at Kaviar Forge will teach you the important basics of making your own tools, including where to find tool steel. You’ll learn how to heat and treat hardened steel to make your own chisels, punches and a hand-forged hammer. Everything you make in the class, you get to keep!
This is an all-day class, so you’ll want to be at the forge from 9 am to 4 pm. The workshop costs $400, and that includes all materials and instruction. If you’ve ever wanted to be a blacksmith for a day, this is your chance. The Kaviar Forge is at 147 Stevenson Avenue in Clifton. This is the perfect neighborhood to visit when you want to see self-reliance and creativity in action, because Clifton’s got plenty of that.
Creating in Clifton
Clifton isn't like any other neighborhood in Louisville. Most communities in Louisville were built in 10 or 15 years. As for Clifton, it took 60 years to create the eclectic, interesting neighborhood you'll discover here today. The first homes were built here in the 1860s, and new homes were built here all the way into the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. There are even brand-new buildings here that are only about 10 years old. This gives Clifton a truly beautiful look. The neighborhood is full of architecture from every period. You can find Victorian mansions here, cute Craftsman-style bungalows, gorgeous modern condos, charming post-war family homes and gorgeous stone family homes built in early American styles.
The homes are only half of what you'll find in Clifton, though they're impressive enough all by themselves. Clifton is also famous for its antique shopping and boutique shopping. This neighborhood is full of independent and locally-owned businesses, places you can't find anywhere else in the city. Clifton is also home to one of the city's very oldest museums, not to mention Escape LOU, Bingham Park and the exciting Clifton Center, where you can find community events and get-togethers of all types.
What else will you find in Clifton? Visit the neighborhood this March to learn some new creative skills, and who knows? Maybe you'll end up wanting to create a life here, too, just like all the other families who have moved to Clifton over the last 150 years.
