Louisville Area Festivals to Check Out in April
If you're in Louisville this spring and you're looking for some quality entertainment, there will be no shortage of things to do. With the Kentucky Derby just over the horizon in May, there are a number of events this month to help you gear up for the big race, as well as a number of other events that boast their own unique appeal. Here are some festivals that will have you out and about in Louisville this April.
The Humana Festival of New American Plays
This festival brings together actors and theater professionals from all across the U.S. to debut new plays. This is a chance for casts and crews to showcase new plays before they hit the stages of Chicago, New York, and L.A. It's also a chance for Louisville residents and visitors to take in some stellar and innovative performances. The plays at the festival include one-acts, monologues, and full-length performances, and many previous productions have gone on to win prestigious awards and be adapted for film and TV. The festival is on throughout the month of April, with performances at venues around the Louisville area.
The Taste of Derby Festival
For food and drink aficionados, the Taste of Derby festival will be the place to be this April 17th. This festival will include dishes from over 65 of Louisville's best restaurants, as well as wine and bourbon tastings, a competition for the best Bloody Mary, and a silent auction. On top of this, the entire event is put on in support of a worthy cause, with all proceeds going to the Dare to Care Food Bank. Tickets for the event are $80, and $50 of this price is tax deductible.
Thunder Over Louisville
This is the annual kickoff for the world-famous Kentucky Derby, and Louisville pulls out all the stops for this show. The Thunder Over Louisville festival includes both an air show and the largest annual fireworks display in North America. Some might even say that this event is bigger than the Kentucky Derby itself, as it attracts on average five times more visitors than the horse race does. This year's event will be held on Saturday, April 20th.
The Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon and Mini-Marathon
With a course that takes runners on a tour of Louisville, as well as through the historic Churchill Downs course, this marathon attracts competitors from every state in America. Every year, over 12,000 participants take to the streets for this marathon and mini-marathon. In addition to the race itself, the weekend also includes a pasta dinner with live music, a hot air balloon show, and a post-race party. This festival kicks off on April 25th, with the official marathon starting on Saturday, April 27th at 7:30 a.m.
Whether you're a theater lover, a foodie, a fitness buff, or just someone looking for some good old-fashioned fun, there's something for you in Louisville this April. Plus, the fun doesn't stop there: Louisville hosts a variety of world-class festivals and events all year round, so there will always be something interesting to check out.
