Louisville Area Festivals to Check Out in May 2013
If you're ready to rev up for the summertime, there's a few events in Louisville this May that might be a great place to start. With music festivals, markets, and an array of local products on offer, the following festivals should pique your interest and perk up the start of your summer!
Kentucky Derby Festival
Starting on April 20th and running for 2 weeks of festivities, the Kentucky Derby is celebrating its 139th running this year. In addition to the famous race, there will be action all over the city including Thunder Over Louisville, the largest fireworks show in North America, and the Pegasus Parade, one of the longest parades in the United States. The legendary race that made Kentucky famous will take place at Churchill Downs on May 4th, so be sure not to miss this world-class event!
Buy Local Fair
Hosted by the Louisville Independent Business Alliance, the 5th Annual Buy Local Fair is being held on Saturday, May 11th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at the Louisville Water Tower. A good opportunity to peruse an assortment of local products, the Buy Local Fair was started out of the desire to stimulate local economy and endorse product diversity in the city. With free admission and a great philosophy to rally behind, this event should make for a great afternoon.
Abbey Road On the River
If you love The Beatles, or are in the mood for some classics, you're in luck on May 23rd when Abbey Road on the River rocks and rolls through Louisville. Taking place at the Belvedere Festival Park since 2005, this five-day event honors the music of The Beatles and some of the best songs in music history. Featuring bands from places as a far flung as Argentina, Italy and Russia, it shouldn't be hard to find a cover you love being played on one of the festival’s nine stages!
Kentucky Flea Market Memorial Day Spectacular
Get ready for summer after all the spring cleaning at the Kentucky Flea Market! With more than 750 booths full of everything from antiques to jewelry to collectibles, the market takes place at the Kentucky Exposition Center and will be running for 4 days from May 24th to May 27th. Keep in mind that admission is free, so this is pre-summer fun for the whole family!
Kentucky Reggae Festival
If you want to get away this season without leaving Louisville, you might want to take a trip to the islands with the Kentucky Reggae Festival. Taking place as part of the Water Tower Music Series (and located at the Water Tower) the festival starts on May 25th and goes for 3 days. With free admission for kids aged 10 and under, this event is family friendly and filled with live music, authentic Jamaican food, and a Caribbean market with vendors from all over the United States. Bring your blankets and your chairs, but leave the pets at home.
With some good ways to kick off the festival season, there’s no excuse to sit at home this spring. Whatever your interest, be it music or antiques, there 's something for everyone in Louisville this May!
