A Short History of Making Strides

Margery Gould Rath was a Massachusetts woman and breast cancer survivor. In 1984, she gathered a group of other survivors and community volunteers in the hopes of organizing an American Cancer Society fundraiser. Rath and her colleagues organized the Making Strides "move-along-a-thon" in Boston. The first ever Making Strides had 200 walkers. In 1993, the event became known as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and that year the walk had over 4000 participants in two cities. Over the last thirty years, Making Strides has contributed over $500 million to the fight against breast cancer. Rath was a committed volunteer until 2001, when cancer took her life.
