Seven Ways To Avoid Heat Stroke While Visiting a Louisville Park

The dogs days of summer are finally here, and with the weather so nice, it's easy to spend hours outside in Louisville's many parks. However, it is predicted that this summer will be warmer than normal, with temperatures getting to 89 degrees Fahrenheit and higher. It is possible to spend time outside and have fun in Louisville's parks, but keep these seven tips in mind in order to avoid heat stroke.

Acclimatize To the Heat Slowly

If you or your kids haven't spent much time outside yet, acclimatize to the high temperatures slowly. Gradually increase the amount of time spent outdoors. Begin with maybe an hour or two in the park, and once you are comfortable with the heat, then increase your time outdoors to three or four hours. Don't shock your system by staying outside too long.

Factor In the Temperature and the Humidity

While the number on the thermostat can help you determine when it is too hot to spend all day outside, be sure to also factor in humidity. The more humid it is, the more you will sweat and the higher your chances are of becoming dehydrated. If possible, go outside during the cooler parts of the day and avoid the parks in the middle of the afternoon.

Take Frequent Rest Breaks

If you have already started to acclimatize to the heat, you might not need to head indoors after a few hours. You can still help yourself avoid heat stroke even if you remain outside: take breaks from physical activity, and try to spend fifteen minutes to half an hour in a shady area.

Don't Forget To Drink Water

Drinking enough water is crucial to keeping heat stroke at bay. Always carry a bottle of water with you if you are going to be spending an extended period of time outside in any of Louisville's parks. If you are thirsty, then you are already slightly dehydrated. Drink before you're thirsty and keep an eye on how much you are sweating.

Replenish Lost Salts

We lose water when we sweat in the heat, but we also lose salts. This can also contribute to heat stroke. When spending hours outside this summer, pack drinks that will help to replenish lost ions like Gatorade or Powerade.

Make Sure You Dress Appropriately

The clothes you choose to wear can also help you avoid heat stroke. Wear clothes that are breathable and lightweight. You might also want to avoid wearing dark colors, as these will only make you hotter.

Know the Warning Signs of Heat Stroke

Finally, make sure you are aware of the warning signs of heat stroke. Knowing the signs mean you can nip it in the bud before it escalates. If you or the people you are with display unexplained fatigue, headaches, lethargy or are suddenly inattentive, get inside to a cooler environment as soon as possible.
