Spotlight on Anchorage: Everything You Need to Know About This Louisville Gem

Originally a part of the land that was offered to the Virginia Militia for their service in the French and Indian War from 1754 to 1763, the city of Anchorage is located in eastern Jefferson County inside Louisville. Earlier known as Hite's Mill and Hobbs Station, the city was renamed after the estate of James W. Goslee, who was a riverboat captain and an early resident of the area. It is said that the anchor at the center of town was taken from his ship, the Matamora. With the Louisville and Frankfort Railroad constructed through the area in 1849, and the interurban railroad completed in 1901, Anchorage became an easily commutable area to downtown Louisville, and quickly became a popular place of residence for the wealthiest Louisville citizens.

Community Resources and Recreation

Highly recognized in the city of Anchorage is the 550 acre E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, which offers winding paths for jogging, an off-leash dog area, lush greenery, a public outdoor swimming pool, an archery range, as well as tennis courts and bike trails. Picnic tables and a playground are offered at the adjoining Hounz Lane Park, and other outdoor areas nearby include Crosby Park and the Owl Creek Golf Course.

Local Access and Public Transportation

The City of Anchorage is roughly bounded by Westport Road to the north, the Gene Snyder Freeway to the east, Hurstbourne Parkway to the west, as well as Shelbyville Road to the south. These routes provide easy access in and out of the city, adjoining Anchorage with its surrounding urban centers. Highway 146 runs through the center of Anchorage, providing easy transportation within the city.

Income Demographics and Local Tax Rates

As recorded in the census of 2000, there were 2,264 residents in Anchorage with a population density of 744.0 people per square mile. The median income for a household in Anchorage was recorded quite high at $133,969, and the median income for a family was even higher at $147,050.

Annual Events and Festivals

Christmastime in Anchorage brings with it the annual yule log lighting and carol singing, as well as many school performances. During the summer months, the historic city is filled with music festivals and outdoor festivities, such as Anchorpalooza, a Kentucky Bluegrass music festival.

With its rich history evident in its many historical churches scattered across its boundaries, as well as its old state parks and city monuments, it's no wonder why many of the wealthiest people in Louisville have chosen Anchorage as their place to reside. Today, Anchorage is a fine gem of Louisville, with grand estates and a warm, friendly atmosphere.
