Spotlight on Spalding: Fast Facts About Spalding University

Gaining its name from Mother Catherine Spalding, who was elected the first mother superior of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth at the age of nineteen, Spalding University has a long tradition of innovation in offering education to a wide variety of students. Located in Louisville, it is the oldest Catholic university west of the Alleghenies.

A Brief History of Early Spalding

As one of the oldest Catholic universities in the United States of America, Spalding University can trace its roots back to 1814 through the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. It started as the Nazareth Academy in Nelson County near Bardstown, receiving a charter from the Commonwealth of Kentucky to grant various degrees in 1829. The Nazareth College opened in 1920 in Louisville, offering the first four-year Catholic college for women. At this time, the Nazareth Academy merged with the Louisville campus.

Becoming Spalding University

In 1969, the school was renamed Spalding College, and all instructional duties were moved to Louisville in 1971. Two years later, the institution become co-educational and independent, opening its doors to students of all backgrounds and faiths. This led to Spalding College eventually becoming Spalding University.

Spalding University Numbers

Spalding University employs 250 faculty members who educate and support approximately 2,500 students. This institution participates in 11 different sports and has 14 different teams that compete in the NCAA. Students of this university participate in lots of charitable and philanthropic work, lending their efforts and talent to over two hundred organizations and institutions. The students at Spalding perform over 1.16 million hours per year of work-study, practicum, internships and service learning programs.

An Overview of Education at Spalding University

In the state of Kentucky, Spalding University was the first institution to offer a Baccalaureate Degree in nursing, a tradition that dates back to 1933. A doctoral program in clinical psychology has been available to aspiring students since 1989 and is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. The university is also home to the Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy, whose students earn a passing grade on the National Certification Examination for Occupational Therapists at a higher rate than the national average. Students can also opt to enroll in programs that lead to a master of fine arts in writing and a master of science in business communication.

Spalding University Sports and Athletics

The Spalding University sports and athletics team name changed in 2006 from the Pelicans to the Golden Eagles. Last year, the men's basketball team competed for the first time as an official NCAA D-III institution. Despite the fact that the Golden Eagles had a difficult schedule, including six teams that played in NCAA's March Madness, they managed to win the conference tournament and regular season championships. Both men's and women's athletics include basketball, soccer, baseball, golf, track and field and cross-country. The women's sporting program also includes volleyball and bowling.

The motto of Spalding University is "What do you want out of life?" Unlike many institutions, which segment the start of their programs into two semesters, Spalding University has seven different starting points throughout the year. Considering the variety of educational and athletic opportunities offered by this institution, as well as the flexibility of their programs, their motto of students getting what they want out of life is quite aptly chosen.
