Take a Guided Hike Through Nature at the Jefferson Memorial Forest June 27
Summertime is time to go outdoors and explore nature. The weather’s warm, the plants are blooming, the animals are out roaming around and exploring, too. It’s the perfect time to visit the Jefferson Memorial Forest, and enjoy a free guided hike to learn more about the natural beauty you can find in Louisville.
On the Orange Trail
A trained guide will lead you through the Jefferson Memorial Forest’s Orange Trail. This is a 2.5-mile trail, and it’s rated as moderate to strenuous. Serious hikers will enjoy this trek through the woods. Novices will find that this trail is serious exercise. Wear your sturdy shoes.
While you walk through the forest, you’ll see some of the plants that make Louisville beautiful. Volunteer Naturalists lead the hike, which will end at the environmental education area. The more you know about nature, the more you can enjoy everything it has to offer.
To join the hiking group, meet up at the Horine Reservation parking lot at 9 am. You’ll find the Jefferson Memorial Forest at 11311 Mitchell Hill Road.
On the South Side
Jefferson Memorial Forest is in south Louisville, and surrounded by several large communities. Orell Station is between the forest and the Ohio River. People who live in this neighborhood have the beauty of nature on both sides.
This neighborhood has unique attractions, like the Eagle Pay Lake. Lots of people come here to spend a quiet day fishing. Orell Station has interesting restaurants as well, such as the well-known Christi's Cafe. Locals will tell you that you've got to eat here before you leave. You may want to drop in after you work up an appetite hiking in the woods.
Locals enjoy living out here because there's a lot of room. With the forest to one side and the river on the other, the neighborhood is surrounded by scenery. Dixie Highway can get you to shopping and other attractions nearby pretty quickly.
Hike through the forest this summer, because that's perfect time to do it, and you can see more of what south Louisville has to offer to visitors and residents alike.
