Take the Master Sommelier Exam September 14

There are only one hundred forty Master Sommeliers currently certified around the globe. The popular documentary "Somm" chronicled the grueling path to achieving this elite certification and educated us as to exactly how much work it takes to reach this pinnacle in the wine world. The first two levels of the Master Sommelier's four certification tests are being held in Louisville at The Seelbach Hotel September 14-16. Louisville's Master Sommeliers, Scott Harper of the Bristol Bar & Grille and Brett Davis of La Coop and Doc Crow's, will lead the educational portion of the level one and two certification programs held in Louisville.

Be Prepared to Corroborate Your Claims

The certification has been available for over forty years and in all those years only 219 people have earned the Master Sommelier diploma. In order to qualify for testing, a candidate must be twenty one years old or of legal drinking age in the country where they are being certified. A candidate must also have at least three years of wine service experience. A simple checking of the yes box on an application will not pass as proof of a candidate's experience.  Letters of recommendation, a completed questionnaire and details of the candidate's work in the industry are required as evidence, and candidates are clearly warned that they must be prepared to corroborate all claims they have made.

Master Sommelier

The fee for the first level of certification is $525 and includes a day and a half of overview with a theory exam in the last half of the second day.  If the price tag doesn't scare you away, the test material may. The test covers wine producing regions around the world, the intricacies of wine service and wine tasting exercises.  The international organization recommends that you not even consider entering level one testing until you have read at least one wine encyclopedia. All is not lost if you fail to earn the 60% passing score on the examination. After waiting 90 days, you may try again at the reduced rate of $325.
