The Phoenix Hill Neighborhood

The Phoenix Hill neighborhood is an area of Louisville that has undergone a drastic evolution since it began in 1774. This area was initially known as Preston’s Enlargement, and was part of the land granted to Colonel William Preston. The city took charge of the community in 1827, and renamed it Uptown.

In 1846, the Cave Hill Cemetery was developed by Edmund Francis Lee on an area that was initially farmland in Phoenix Hill. Great care was taken in designing this beautiful place of eternal rest.  As time passed, people became a bit more extravagant as profits increased in the growing city. The simple cemetery with the garden atmosphere started getting more monumental art and evolved into one of the historic landmarks Phoenix Hill is known for today.

Former Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane decided a change was needed in 1977. The Mayor saw the potential of the area and obtained federal funding to revitalize Phoenix Hill. Thanks to the efforts started at that time, the neighborhood is a thriving community today. You will find the homes and apartment communities to be upscale and comfortable, while the nightclubs range from Irish Pubs to trendy clubs. There is also a variety of local businesses to supply your everyday needs, along with some unique boutiques and coffee houses.

The rise of Phoenix Hill from the ashes of the past is noted in the local historical record books. The transformation that occurred in the community truly justifies its name. The Phoenix Hill neighborhood doesn’t lack for entertainment or convenience. Living in this area you get the excitement of the Highlands, the convenience of downtown and expressway access all in one perfect little package.
