Things to Do Near Anchorage, Kentucky

Anchorage, Kentucky is one of the state's most historic and beautiful cities. With a population of only slightly more than 2,000 people, Anchorage is not a large city by any means, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in character. John Schnatter, the founder of Papa John's Pizza, owns 6% of the land in the city and is responsible for restoring three historic buildings and the city's rail station. He has also built a new building in the same style as the historical one and opened the Anchorage Trail, a hiking path through the city.

Get Energetic at All About Kids Indoor Play Center

Located just 14 minutes away from Anchorage, the All About Kids indoor play center is a hit with both children and adults. They offer classes and instructions for such sports as taekwondo, cheerleading, swimming, gymnastics and dance and host both birthday parties and school field trips. They exist to boost the self-esteem of children through their sports programs while offering a fun and exciting way for the kids to stay fit and active. If your kids have a lot of extra energy or are interested in one of the classes then you should consider taking them to All About Kids.

Pack a Picnic and Hike the Anchorage Trail

This 4 million dollar biking and hiking trail is a 2-mile loop that covers the scenic beauty of Anchorage. There is an abundance of free parking by the beginning of the trail, which is located by several small businesses, so you can feel free to grab a bite to eat before or after heading down the trail. It is paved for cyclists but there are some unpaved nature trails for the more adventurous. Pack up a picnic for the family and rest on one of the many benches you will encounter on your trip to enjoy a meal in the fresh outdoors.

Take a Day Trip to the Big City

One of the greatest things about living in Anchorage, Kentucky is its close proximity to Louisville, the state’s largest city. In less than 30 minutes you can pack up the family and drive into the big city to spend the day, not having to worry about dealing with big city living day after day. With one short drive you can be at the front gates of Kentucky's Six Flags amusement park or watching the wildlife at the Louisville Zoological Garden. Anchorage's location puts it at just the right place to make a day trip out of some of Kentucky’s most family friendly locations.

Anchorage is a fantastic city that provides a very traditional atmosphere and prides itself on its historic past. Because it is still close enough to Louisville you never feel like you are out of the loop while still providing a nice, secluded atmosphere. The city provides the best of both worlds; you will always be close enough to Louisville to make easy day trips while still being able to enjoy family outings on the popular Anchorage trail.
