Walk Around the West Main Historic District

Some of Louisville's oldest and most impressive buildings are in the West Main Historic District. Lots of people know about historic neighborhoods like Old Louisville, but West Main has a unique downtown, old-time charm all its own. Take a walk in this part of the city this October to enjoy fall weather and some absolutely amazing architecture.

A Fall Walk Around West Main

The West Main Historic District is on the National Register of Historic places, and has more cast iron building facades than any other neighborhood in the U.S., with the exception of New York City's SoHo.

If you've visited West Main in the past, it might have been to go to Museum Row. This is a center of culture for the city, an area where you can find five museums all within walking distance. Come here during the day for culture, come at night for live music and entertainment. There are several bars and places to have fun in West Main, too.

Look back at Louisville's past in the West Main area to enjoy a perfect fall walk, but don't stop there. You'll find one of the city's great historic neighborhoods just a few blocks east of the West Main area: Butchertown.

A Visit to Butchertown

Butchertown is more than two hundred years old. The neighborhood is right next to the river, and that made it a prime place for businesses to be established in the 1800s. You can see some of this early history still standing in Butchertown. The famous Thomas Edison house, which dates to the 1850s, is a main attraction.

The other homes in Butchertown are much newer than Edison's old place. Some of the condo and apartment buildings in the neighborhood were built within the last 10 years, and many of the older buildings have been renovated. All sorts of housing is available in Butchertown, from large family homes to sleek condos. Butchertown is right next to downtown Louisville and all of its amazing history, so people who live here have access to Museum Row and everything else the city has to offer.

Butchertown continues to be a thriving, continuously-evolving community in Louisville that keeps pace with the times without losing the historic charm that made it such a great neighborhood even two centuries ago. Go see why so many people want to live in Butchertown this fall, and go see some of Louisville's interesting history.
